The conference will analyze the birth of art history, from the sixteenth century to the nineteenth century, from Vasari to Hegel, showing the philosophy of art on which it is based. This philosophy makes it possible to think of a unity of essence of art and the arts, to distinguish epochs such as the different moments of incarnation or of the realization of this essence, and finally to determine a classical style orienting and norming its course or her works. In the present day, which is that of the avant-gardes and of a profound indetermination or opening up of the concept of art, it is not certain that this philosophy of art history is still possible. What then characterizes and shapes our new art history in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries? A hypothesis and an answer will be tried: a history of art without Art, without epochs and historicism.
Pierre-Henry Frangne is professor of philosophy of art and aesthetics in the department of art history of the University of Rennes. He has published about twenty books (personal book, collective work direction, edition, translation or critical anthology) on Mallarmé's thought, on the French symbolist art of the end of the 19th century, on the relations between arts in contemporary times, on the musical thought of the seventeenth and twentieth centuries, on the photographic landscape. He has created, and is still leading with Roger Pouivet, the Aesthetica collection of the Presses Universitaires de Rennes.
